Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. To make croutons, pull the baguette into 3/4-inch chunks. To make crostini, pull the baguette into 1 1/2- to 2-inch chunks. Combine the oil, pepper, salt and garlic in a bowl. Add the bread chunks and toss to coat with the seasonings. Spread the chunks in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Bake until the edges are golden brown and crunchy, 6 to 8 minutes. Cool the croutons or crostini to room temperature and use them immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
