Dali Toi is a very simple tempered dal from the Konkan area. Dali Toi or Daali Thoy is a classic Konkani dish made with cooked lentils (Toor dal) tempered with few Indian spices and fresh herbs. It is a very comforting dish and can be eaten with hot rice, phulkas, roti etc.
Ingredients:
Ghee (Clarified butter) - 1 tbsp
Red chillies, dry - 2-3 nos
Mustard seeds - ½ tsp
Ginger, chopped - 1 tsp
Haldi powder - ¼ tsp
Hing - a pinch
Curry leaves - few
Tur dal, cooked and mashed - 1 cup
Salt - to taste
Method:
Wash toor dal and add a little turmeric powder to it and pressure cook it for 4-5 whistles or till the dal is cooked. Once the dal is done, mash it thoroughly and keep aside.
Heat ghee in a kadai, add dry red chillies, mustard seeds, when the splutters, add chopped ginger, turmeric powder, asafoetida (hing) and curry leaves. When it gives a nice aroma, add the dal in the pan and mix. If the dal is too thick, you can adjust the constituency by adding water.
Add the required amount of salt and let it boil for 4-5 minutes. Take off the heat. Serve with white rice, a spicy side dish of your choice and pickle
